A life-long San Diegan, Jan was educated at Point Loma High School and the University of Arizona, where she majored in journalism and radio/TV.  Starting her career as a real estate journalist, she served as editor of  BUILDER magazine for the San Diego Building Industry Association (BIA).  Jumping from journalism into public relations, she joined a major local marketing firm where she learned the business and grew her media relations skills.  In 1986, after taking a year to travel the world, she returned to San Diego to found Scribe Communications.

Her community involvement includes past directorships at a number of non-profits, including the YWCA, Charter 100, the San Diego Press Club and La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary.  A graduate of LEAD San Diego and winner of the San Diego Business Journal’s “Women Who Mean Business Award,” she supports several local women’s organizations including Women’s Empowerment and Voices of Women.  In addition to serving on the marketing committee at La Jolla Country Day School, she is now assisting with the 2009 San Diego Press Club Journalism Awards.

Her most rewarding pro-bono activity, which began in October 2001, is the ongoing promotion of the Rotary Jalalabad School in Afghanistan, which currently serves 3000 boys and 1500 girls.

After more than 10 years of experience writing and editing for local newspapers, including the North County Times, Klassen joined Scribe Communications in 1997. She earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism from San Diego State University in 1986. Klassen is a graduate of LEAD San Diego (Class of 2001) and was honored in 2007 to be among the YWCA’s TWIN recipients.

Currently serving on the Building Industry Association’s Sales and Marketing Council, as well as the Words Alive! PR & Marketing Committee, Klassen’s past volunteer activities include several years with the San Diego Press Club’s Journalism Awards Committee, Girl Scouts, California Center for the Arts, Escondido, and Heart to Heart International.

Educated at the University of California, San Diego, April has a B.A. in Communication, and a professional certificate in Sustainable Business Practices from UCSD Extension. She has a passion for new media, and closely follows new communication trends. During her time at UCSD, she held 5 organizational leadership positions, and acted as a public relations consultant for multiple student programs and non-profit clubs. Harter is currently serving on the Public Relations Society of America New Pros Committee as the board liaison, and is a member of the San Diego Press Club.

As a contributor to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Harter joined the Team in Training Program and ran her first half-marathon in San Francisco. She will complete a second half-marathon this fall. An avid cardio-kickboxer, she plans to become a group instructor.

Bradford Robert Bradford, Branding and Issues Management

Robert Bradford has expertise in regional and national media relations, the development of op-eds, position papers and white papers, fundraising communications, strategic web marketing, crisis communications and branding. Working with major research organizations like Duke University Medical Center, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, Genzyme and Amgen, he has developed a strong niche in higher education, the life sciences, healthcare, the law, and the nonprofit sector.
